Raise a glass to Colmar

29th October 2007

With less rain than any other town in France, Colmar offers the perfect climate for viticulture - and for short breaks.

Located in the Haut-Rhin area of the Alsace region, this French town sits on the banks of the Lauch river, which connects to the Rhine via a canal. Established in the ninth century, Colmar has spent its lifetime under Swedish, German and French control.

While much of modern Colmar is urban sprawl, the old town centre remains one of the most picturesque areas in France. Many of the buildings here date back to the Renaissance era, with pastel-coloured houses lining the cobbled streets.

Part of the old town, Petite Venise, brings a Venetian flavour to Colmar. Visitors can walk alongside the waterways on their way to viewing the impressive Maison Pfister. Other attractions include the well-preserved churches of the Dominicans and Saint-Martin.

However, Colmar is not just famous for its medieval architecture. The town is sacred to wine enthusiasts, who flock to the Alsace region to visit its many vineyards. Colmar offers a great base for those looking to explore the Alsace wine route, which stretches along the foot of the Vosges mountains.

The wine trail itself provides many sites along the way, from the fortified walls of Obernai to the Eguisheim castle.

Explore Colmar and its many treasures.
