Beautiful Clermont-Ferrand

One of the oldest cities in France, Clermont-Ferrand and its surrounding area has been inhabited since pre-historic times. Once an important Roman city, it still has many sights which have been left by its inhabitants' ancestors.
There are a number of important churches in the city, although none as impressive as the cathedral. Taking over 650 years to complete, the Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption is an imposing structure. It has many carvings and statues contained within it and is one of the most beautifully-preserved cathedrals in the region.
The intricate Amboise fountain, currently in the Place de la Poterne, is an incredible feat of gothic style and Renaissance exuberance. The huge structure, which would rival Rome's Trevi Fountain for its intricacy, is full of many symbols and carvings, but perhaps the most amazing thing about this massive structure is that it has been moved several times since it was first erected in 1511.
One of the most famous monuments in the city is the statue of Vercingetorix, the Gaulish chieftain who defeated Julius Caesar. Sculpted in the 19th century, the statue acts as a reminder of the city's long history and stands proudly in the large Place de Jaude square at the heart of Clermont-Ferrand. It was created by Bartholdi, the man responsible for New York's Statue of Liberty. The sculpture directly lines up with the Puy-de-Dome volcano which dominates the city’s skyline.
While Clermont-Ferrand is full of many important sights created by man, it is also famed for the natural geography of the area, which sees it surrounded by former volcanoes. While they are no longer active and do not pose a threat to the inhabitants of the area, they have become big tourist attractions, especially among travellers keen to enjoy some walking during their break.
