Take a pilgrimage to Chartres

29th October 2007

Many a pilgrim has headed to the French town of Chartres, drawn by its iconic cathedral. However, many these days make a more secular pilgrimage by train to sample the area's many treasures.

The capital of the Aure-et-Loire region, Chartres has survived centuries of occupation and devastation, from the burning by the Normans in 858 to the bombing by the Germans during the second world war. Much of this has to do with Chartres' position as a commercial centre and its strategic position on the bank of the Eure river.

However, its beauty has remained remarkably intact, not least that of the Notre-Dame Cathedral. The towering spires and stained glass windows have been a beacon to pilgrims since the building of the cathedral in the 12th century. These days, the landmark is listed by Unesco as a world heritage site.

There is also much to admire along the banks of the Eure. Visitors can cross the river across the bridges that have stood for centuries and view the remains of the old fortifications. The Parc des Bords de l'Eure offers a great opportunity to relax among the natural beauty that Chartre has to offer.

Why not take a short break in Chartres?
