Chambery: A Savoyard treasure
24th October 2007
Once the seat of power for the House of Savoy, Chambéry has remained the historical capital of the Savoie department of France since the 13th century. Today, the hallmarks of its imperial history can still be seen, making it a prime destination for those with an interest in European history.
Much of Chambéry's medieval majesty can still be witnessed with a visit to the city's old town. The most important reminder of its former glory is the survival of the Castle of the Dukes of Savoy. While the complex may no longer be the beating heart of an empire, it is home to Savoy County Council and the Préfecture.
These days, Chambéry is more likely to be noted for its closeness to winter sports facilities than it is for military prowess. Located in the French Alps, the skiing resorts of Val d'Isere, Grenoble and Aix-les-Bains are all within touching distance.
But the natural beauty of the city extends to more than the alpine slopes. From Chambéry, visitors can easily reach a number of national parks, including the vast reserves at Vanoise, Bauges and Chartreuse.
And one of the most picturesque lakes in Europe can also be discovered with a short trip north of Chambéry. Lac du Bourget stretches for 18 kilometres along the foot of the Jura mountains.
Take a short break in Chambéry.
