Scaling the walls of Carcassonne

9th November 2007

With its high fortified walls, you could be mistaken for assuming that the city of Carcassonne does not want visitors. However, that could not be further from the truth, as its countless admirers will testify.

Located between the Massif Central and the Pyrenees, Carcassonne is a melting pot of Mediterranean and French influences and even has its own language - Occitan. The city is split into two parts, with the upper town - or cité - being the main attraction.

Here, visitors can view the magnificent fortifications that were begun by the Romans and concluded by the Trencavels. In the 19th century, the walls were in such disrepair that they faced demolition. However, they were restored by the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, ensuring their wonder is preserved for future generations.

The towers and ramparts have proven to be an inspiration to many, ranging from Walt Disney to Kate Mosse - who gives a fictional account of the city's history in her novel Labyrinth - and there is even a board game named after the city. The views afforded by a night-time stroll across the Pont Vieux bridge reveal why so many have fallen in love with Carcassonne.

While the upper town is undoubtedly the jewell in Carcassonne's crown, visitors would also be advised to take a boat trip on the Canal du Midi. The Languedoc area is also of note for its famous wines - and its vineyards are certainly worth exploring.

Take a city break in Carcassonne.
