Capri - a beacon for the rich and famous

15th May 2008

Through its eventful and illustrious history, the biggest names and the greatest minds have turned to Capri like flowers to the sun.

From the world's best-known celebrities to some of its leading thinkers and artists, those who are looking for a luxurious and secluded retreat have repeatedly gravitated to the Italian island.

The tone was set by Capri's first settlers, the Greeks, who perhaps defined more than any the tradition of European thought. In the centuries that followed, artists such as John Singer Sargent and writers like Graham Greene were drawn by the magical grottos and mountainous peaks of the island.

As the modern age arrived, with more and more young travellers taking part in what became known as the Grand Tour of Europe, there emerged the trend for celebrities to enjoy the treasures of this idyll. Among the famous names that have been spotted on Capri in recent times are Mariah Carey, Liz Hurley and Lindsay Lohan.

What, you may ask, keeps these people coming back to Capri? The famous Blue Grotto is one must-see feature of the island, while a walk down the Via Krupp allows for breathtaking views of the sea. The island is also home to a number of imperial villas and forts that will delight history-loving visitors.

Follow in the footsteps of the stars and fall in love with Capri.
