Vidam Park in Budapest
27th September 2006
From April 1st to November 30th every year, the historic Vidam Park opens up its gates for visitors to enjoy. Budapest has had a fairground on this spot for over 200 years and that tradition is continued with a wide variety of attractions.
The Vidam park was born in 1950 when the fairground was merged with the English Park. This resulted in a park area over 6,5 hectares. While the park does have lots of modern white-knuckle rides there is also plenty of sedate entertainment for those who do not wish to be made to feel queasy. The large size of the park means there is plenty of space for peace and quiet despite being in the heart of the city.
Situated on six hectares of land, Vidam Park offers plenty for visitors to see and do, as well as providing a wonderful haven in the midst of the busy city.
Alongside the more modern rides, such as the Looping Star rollercoaster – which whisks its passengers around at breakneck speeds – there is also plenty of nostalgia here. For example, the equestrian merry-go-round was built in 1906.
One of the main attractions is the impressive cave railway, which sees passengers taken past some evocative scenes as a recording of poet Petofi Sandor's epic János vitéz is played.
Vidam Park is a great place for both children and adults on a short break, offering a glimpse of a more tranquil age and an opportunity to discover some of the history of entertainment parks.
