Budapest – Bathe or cave in this historical city

1st September 2006

Labelled the Queen of the Danube, Budapest is a city whose history and heritage is intrinsically linked with the river that runs through it.

The River Danube dissects the city from north to south and originates from the beautiful Gellert Hill, which is located on Budapest's fringes. Rich in museums and old cobbled streets, Budapest has also been known as the City of Spas with over a dozen thermal baths served by the a host of natural springs in the region.

One of the more popular options is Gellert Bath, which dates back to the thirteenth century and has an exquisite interior made for relaxation. Many of Budapest's Turkish baths date back to the 16th century and give visitors a great insight in the splendour of the Ottoman bathing culture – good examples of these include Kiraly Bath, Lukacs Bath and Rudas Bath.

Particularly popular is the Szechenyi Bath – one of Europe's biggest bathing complexes – where there is both an indoor pool located in a beautiful neo-baroque building anda warm outdoor pool supplied by the same spring.

Budapest's caves – there is a network of around 200 discovered caves under the city – are hugely impressive and an essential side trip in any visit here. Castle Cave is a system of karst caves which run under the castle district of the city for around six miles – visitors can explore 43,000 square feet of these caves through regular organised tours. Gellert Hill Cave is another interesting option, having been sculpted into a chapel like the one found at Lourdes in the early 20th century.

Visitors wishing to unwind after sampling Budapest's delights can relax at one of the many restaurants and bars lining the old town centre. Hungary's local beer Dreher is omnipresent in the city and the hustle and bustle of the main square provides all the entertainment one would need.
