The Atomium in Brussels
8th February 2007
The Atomium was built for the Brussels World’s Fair in 1958 and is one of the most distinctive attractions in Europe.
Standing 102 metres high and made up of nine interconnected giant steel spheres, the structure represents an iron crystal molecule magnified hundreds of billions of times.
The Atomium was designed by architect André Waterkeyn and was originally only intended to stand for six months, but its popularity with residents and visitors assured its survival. The structure re-opened last year after an 18 month closure for essential maintenance work.
The top sphere of the Atomium is reached by one of the continent’s fastest lifts, and provides stunning views of both Brussels and the surrounding region. A gourmet restaurant will open in the sphere on March 21st, serving dishes created by famous chef Alexandre Masson.
Other spheres host a series of exhibitions, with future events including a display of the work of contemporary artist Jean-Luc Moerman. Current features incorporate a look back at the architecture and fashion of the 1950s and 60s. One of the world’s most distinctive buildings, the Atomium should not be missed by anyone enjoying a short break in Brussels.
