Mini Europe in Brussels

8th June 2006

Brussels is largely regarded as the heart of the European Union and the city clearly takes this moniker seriously. At the foot of the impressive Atomium building lies Mini Europe, a collection of all the sights of the EU, but on a smaller scale.

Visitors feel like giants walking past the various famous landmarks, such as London's Big Ben and Paris' Eiffel Tower. Mini Europe allows visitors to get a flavour for each country of the European Union.

It has become an incredibly popular attraction with tourists, despite only being open from March 25th to January 7th every year.

The models are painstaking replicas of the originals, with almost all built on a 1:25 scale, although some larger structures, such as the reconstruction of Mount Vesuvius, are built on a smaller, 1:1000 scale. There is also the opportunity for visitors to get a better understanding of the history and heritage of some of these places, through re-enactments such as the falling of Germany's Berlin Wall.

New attractions for 2006 include Prague, featuring its Old Town hall, complete with fully-functioning Astronomical Clock.

A visit to Brussels and its Mini Europe truly is an education on the ever-expanding European Union.
