Centuries of history at Brest
13th September 2007
Reaching out into the Atlantic at the tip of the Brittany peninsula, the city of Brest has long been a coveted point for naval and commercial forces. However, most invaders these days come only with the intention of falling in love with this enchanting location.
Brest has endured centuries of battles at sea and two world wars to remain one of France's most attractive cities. The worst damage was suffered during World War II, after which much of the urban area had to be rebuilt. However, it is in its military history that much of the attraction of Brest lies.
In the mid 1990s, restoration work was completed at the Questrel Fort, allowing visitors the opportunity to explore some of the city's fortifications. Much of Brest's defences are now ruined, which makes a visit to this restored fort all the more essential.
One of the most impressive sights in Brest is the castle, which itself was the subject of battles between the French and English during the 14th century. Perhaps fittingly, the castle is now home to Brest's Naval Museum, which features model ships based on some of French naval history's most famous fleets.
Nowadays, the mild temperatures of the marina make it more attractive to visitors than navy generals, with boating and water sports central to Brest's way of life. As well as enjoying the easy pace of the port, visitors can learn more about marine life at the Oceanopolis park.
For something more cultural, the Museum of Fine Art houses an extensive collection of Symbolist masterpieces, while those looking to enjoy the famed French food and wine should head to the bistros along Rue Jean-Jaurs.
Take a short break in historic Brest.
