Historical Brescia
20th June 2006
Brescia has a long and important history as a major centre of power in Italy. The city's location near Lake Garda and Lake Iseo, as well as the Alps, helped to ensure its significance since before Roman times.
One such historic building is Brescia cathedral, which is a mixture of both the ancient structure and a more modern one which was constructed around it later. As a result, the architecture is some of the most interesting and unique to be found anywhere in the world and is well worth a visit.
The Palazzo della Loggia is now the town hall, but was constructed in the 16th century as a palace, which explains its beauty and grandeur. Exhibitions are often held in the building and these provide visitors with an opportunity to visit the wonderful structure.
Brescia's castle, or Castello, is also worth visiting. Sitting proudly above the old centre of the city, the castle offers magnificent views across the Po plain and towards the Alps.
The city is popular with tourists from both inside and outside Italy, meaning that it can often be busy, especially during the warm summer months, and as such Brescia can become a wonderful base from which to explore the relaxing calm of Italy's great lakes, as well as offering the chance to go climbing into the Alps.
Taking a short break in Brescia always offers something different for travellers to enjoy, whether it be in the bustling city or at the calming waters of Lake Garda or Lake Iseo.
