Bremen – a Hanseatic Nautical Adventure

25th August 2006

The 1,200-year-old city of Bremen is notable for its strong nautical history which is entwined with its location alongside the impressive River Wesser.

Bremen's waterways hug the city centre and give this Hanseatic giant a distinct feel. The quayside is lined with a range of impressive nautical vessels including a 13th century boat, a three-masted Admiral Nelson frigate and an interesting pancake ship. Those who would like to pursue the city's nautical heritage further are advised to visit the German Maritime Museum with its impressive museum harbour.

The nearby Schlachte is just a five minute wander though Bremen's waterways and has a huge array of friendly bars and cafes with an expanse of outdoor seating for around 2,000 people.

Other popular attractions in Bremen include the city's Rhododendron Park, which has an unmatched collection including around 680 of the world's 1,000 rhododendron species as well as 1,000 hybrids of azaleas and rhododendrons. Art lovers will be in their element with The Kunsthalle credited as one of the country's leading foundation museums and the Neues Museum Weserburg has Germany's largest collection of contemporary art.

Visitors here will find a thriving water locked city where the tale of the Town Musicians of Bremen by the Brothers Grimm – signifying the musical and free spirit of the city - rests large in the consciousness.
