The lakeside beauty of Bregenz
5th March 2008
Situated on the banks of Lake Constance, Bregenz has been a beacon for settlers and visitors alike over the centuries.
Even today, reminders of the Roman age can be spotted around the town. Widely regarded as the iconic landmark of Bregenz, Martin's Tower is built on Roman foundations, though parts such as the chapel's frescoes, were added later.
Following the fall of Rome's empire, Bregenz was taken by the Habsburgs in the 15th and 16th centuries. Several examples of architecture from this period and beyond can be found in the city's upper town, such as the remnants of 13th century walls and the old town hall.
Into the 19th and 20th centuries, the town fell under Bavarian control before being appointed the capital of Vorarlberg. Most of the modern buildings constructed in Bregenz can be found in the lower town.
Today, visitors will arrive to find an industrial town that has survived the wars and invasions to retain much of its beauty. Nearby, the resort of Pfänder offers great winter sports facilities, while in the warmer months, Bregenz's summer festival is a great excuse to explore the lake district.
