Jean Moulin Centre in Bordeaux

17th November 2006

Set up to commemorate the role played by the French Resistance in the Second World War, the Jean Moulin Centre gives visitors a fascinating insight into the under-the-radar tactics employed by those opposed to their government's policy of collaboration in the 1940s.

The centre was founded in 1967 with the explicit intention of acknowledging the part played in the resistance movement by Bordeaux residents, specifically one Jean Moulin.

Moulin was an early star of his country's political system, rising to the prominent position of prefect at an earlier age than anyone else in French history. But the war forced him into exile, whereupon he met Charles de Gaulle and was appointed leader of the resistance.

Parachuting into France in 1942, Moulin co-ordinated disparate movements and set up an underground press along with authors such as Albert Camus. He was eventually captured and died while under torture in 1943.

The museum presents a unique insight into both Moulin and his cause, with articles from the subversive press mixing with weaponry and tactical documents.

However, those of a more cultured disposition will also find much to admire, such as Edmond Boissonet's shocking yet revealing paintings of the horrors of day to day life during the war. Moulin himself painted under a pseudonym, and a series of his works can be found on the third floor of the museum.

With vast archives also accessible on request, and a series of guided tours available in both French and English, the centre undoubtedly offers a comprehensive insight into one of the world's most respected resistance movements.
