Jardin Public in Bordeaux
2nd January 2007
Bordeaux's Jardin Public is found to the north of the city and contains a variety of attractions ranging from the cultural to the archaeological.
The park occupies over ten hectares of land and was built in 1756 as a classic example of a French garden by A J Gabriel. Exactly 100 years later the garden was transformed into an English design, which has remained ever since.
The same year also saw the creation of many of the features that make the park a favourite spot for residents and visitors alike. An arboretum contains numerous examples of French foliage, while the botanical gardens hold over 3,000 species of plant life.
Also found within the park grounds is the Museum of Natural History. The museum was one of the first public collections to be displayed following the French Revolution, and features a number of scientific exhibits once held by French aristocrats.
The museum's main collections focus on local wildlife and birds, butterflies, mammals and reptiles that are now either extinct or endangered.
Busts of famous French figures including novelist Francois Mauriac are also on display in the park. Visitors can take a relaxing boat trip across the garden's lake, or investigate the Roman remains that can still be found at specially designated areas within the park boundaries, making the park an ideal location for those looking to enjoy a tranquil break.
