Heritage Days in Bordeaux

19th July 2006

Bordeaux has a rich history, intertwined with that of wine, and every year in September visitors are able to view a wide variety of historical buildings in the city.

On September 16th and 17th the city's museums and monuments are opened to the public for free. Many of them are related to the story of wine, as Bordeaux has prospered over the years from transforming its grapes into beautiful wines which are revered the world over.

Often described as one of the most beautiful cities in France, the country has a wonderful architectural heritage which crosses all styles, from Art Deco to Roman. Among the treats for visitors over the weekend are the imposing Grand Theatre and the Roman amphitheatre.

Many of the 18th century buildings which are opened up to visitors reflect the important history of Bordeaux, with the beautiful structures demonstrating the wealth created by its wine. Among the buildings which have now been transformed into museums are the Centre Jean-Moulin, which looks at the region during the Second World War, and the Musee des Vins celebrating the city's wine heritage.

This provides an enriching experience for anyone on a short break to Bordeaux and is a splendid opportunity to see some of the historic buildings and contents of the museums without having to spend any money for the privilege.
