Bonn A city of culture
14th September 2006
Set in the heart of Germany, Bonn has become famed around the world for its cultural heritage. The city's Museum Mile in the centre is one of its greatest attractions.
The various museums are a treat for visitors, with some telling the history of the city itself, while others detail the lives of some of its most famous sons, such as composer Ludwig van Beethoven, who was born here in 1770. Among the city's finest museums there is the Bonn Art Museum, the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany and August Macke House, Beethoven's birthplace.
Music played an important part in Bonn's history and this is reflected in the large number of theatres and music halls still in use today. One of the most important of the city's musical legacies is its Beethoven Orchestra, which is one of the best in Germany and regularly holds concerts bringing the composer's wonderful music to life.
For visitors interested in the history of Germany, Bonn offers a great insight into the country's past and was the capital of West Germany until the nation's reunification in 1990.
Situated on the banks of the Rhine River, Bonn is one of the most picturesque cities in Germany and with so much culture and history it is the ideal place for a short break.
