Soviet photojournalist exhibited in Berlin

4th June 2008

Until the end of July, visitors to Berlin can see some of the most iconic photographs of the Second World War.

Yevgeny Khaldei was a Ukrainian photojournalist who was took what would become one of the defining images of the conflict.

In May 1945, Khaldei photographed Russian soldiers as they hoisted the flag of the Soviet Union over the remains of the Reichstag building.

Khaldei's portfolio of photojournalism includes images of Stalin at the Potsdam conference in 1945, Hermann Goering in the dock at Nuremburg and Russian composer Dmitry Shostakovich.

Those interested in getting a closer look at Khaldei's work at the Martin-Gropius-Bau exhibition hall in Berlin, where 200 of his photographs are on display.

The curator of the exhibition Ernst Volland told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty that every official photo taken during the war was a propaganda tool.

"Khaldei was able to do it in a way that was absolutely not kitsch heroism. He showed people with all their suffering and all their pain. This was his main purpose," he commented.

Opened in 1881, the Martin-Gropius-Bau exhibition hall was named after one of the architects that designed it. Damaged during the war, the hall was restored to its present splendour in 1978.
