Humboldt Museum in Berlin

1st February 2007

Berlin's Natural History Museum, more commonly known as the Humboldt Museum after famous natural scientist Alexander von Humboldt, holds more than 25 million specimens and is one of Germany's most fascinating attractions.

The museum has stood for over 100 years, having been built between 1885 and 1889 by August Tiede, and is now split into sections focusing on Mineralogy, Zoology and Palaeontology.

Over 1,800 fossils are found within the collection, with giant snails and armadillos featuring alongside remnants of primates and birds.

The Humboldt is most famous for its brachiosaurus and archaeopteryx exhibits. The brachiosaurus fossil is the largest mounted dinosaur display in the world, measuring over 22 metres in length and 12 metres in height.

The archaeopteryx is the world's earliest known bird, and the museum's fossil is one of just three ever discovered. The Humboldt also owns the first such skeleton which is not displayed due to poor condition. Unseen collections are so vast that they outnumber those on display by around 300 to one.

Other displays include Germany's biggest collection of meteorites, which features over 4,000 meteorites collected from countries ranging from France to Namibia. The largest on display weighs 215 kilos.

The Humboldt's huge collection provides an amazing insight into the history of the natural world and is a key part of any trip to Berlin.
