Cold War remembered in Berlin

24th September 2008

Visitors may want to explore the historical and cultural offerings of the city ahead of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall next year.

The city to this day holds tell-tale signs of its war-torn past such as the resonant remains of the Berlin Wall, which served as a physical division between East and West Germany during the Cold War.

Remnants can be viewed at the Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Strasse dedicated to the victims who were killed trying to cross the wall and history buffs can examine the details of the conflict at the Documentation Center opposite.

A 1.3km long-section can be viewed at the Berlin Wall East Side Gallery near the city centre, covered in 106 paintings from artists from around the world, according to the monument's website.

Other attractions for sightseers may be an unmissable trip to the top of the Fernsehturm television tower on Alexanderplatz for impressive views over the city.

Events taking place before the end of the year include the Art Forum Berlin at Messe Berlin for art lovers and the Festival of Lights, an illuminations and fireworks display taking place all over the city.

For the festive season there is the annual Christmas market at the Gendarmenmarkt for people wanting to pick up treats for loved-ones at home and enjoy a glass of mulled wine in an "exquisite" setting of Christmas cottages illuminated by fairy lights.
