Berlin's Egyptian Museum

2nd January 2007

Berlin's Egyptian Museum is found in the city's celebrated Museum Island district and hosts one of the world's most important collections of Egyptian artefacts.

The museum's first objects arrived in the city in 1828 under the command of the King of Prussia Friedrich Wilhelm III. However, the most famous relics of the extensive collection were originally discovered by the Germany Oriental Society in the early 20th century in Amarna, Egypt, an area which was ruled by King Akhenaten and Queen Nefertiti over 3,000 years ago.

The museum's most celebrated exhibit is a golden bust of Queen Nefertiti which displays the monarch in old age. A large papyrus collection includes works of Egyptian and Arab literature as well as illustrated books of the dead.

Other important relics include an elaborately decorated portrait head of Queen Tiye, often regarded by Egyptians as an equal to the gods. The Berlin Green Head dates from roughly 400 BC and shows how Egyptian artists were influenced by the Greek world.

A series of temporary exhibitions can also be found within the museum. A forthcoming event will feature highlights from a recent excavation of the holy Amun Temple in Sudan, which include the temple's 1.6 ton altar. The exhibits provide an overview of hundreds of years of Egyptian life and the museum should not be missed by those taking a break in Berlin.
