Berlin's Bode Museum
19th October 2006
Visitors to Berlin will once again be able to investigate the delights of the city's Bode Museum after it was officially reopened on October 19th, following a £102 million renovation project.
Belonging to the group of museums on Berlin's so-called Museum Island, the restoration signifies the city's desire to establish itself as a capital of culture to rival Paris and London, with the overhauled Island taking centre stage.
The Bode itself was originally built in 1904, with building and artwork alike intended to celebrate the majesty of the Prussian era.
However, World War II bombing campaigns and the rigours of ageing meant that it had been falling into an ever worsening state of disrepair before the latest revamp.
Now restored to its former glory, the museum displays its astonishing collection of artwork in full for the first time since before the Cold War, with many complimentary works previously being divided between East and West Berlin.
The museum is most famous for its extensive collection of sculptures. Extravagant Byzantine statues, dramatic figures from the Middle Ages and baroque works from the Prussian era constitute just some of the breathtaking works on display. With over 60 huge halls to discover, visitors will inevitably find themselves spending hours upon end passing back and forth through the lavishly refurbished halls.
