Carnival in Barcelona
31st October 2006
Long known for its indomitable spirit, the Catalan capital of Barcelona lets its hair down and enjoys itself with the annual carnival, which runs from February 1st to March 31st 2007.
The theme of the event can be summed up in one simple word: excess. From food to costumes, the Catalans know a good opportunity to go overboard when they see one, and the festival doesn't disappoint.
The event begins with a traditional tortilla competition, the winner being commended for taste, presentation and filling. That is just the start of two months' worth of culinary experimentation, as local meats such as the spicy Salchichon sausage are displayed and eaten outside the city's many cafes.
Two very different events mark the conclusion of the carnival. The final weekend sees a colourful parade, complete with banners, streamers, carriages and marching bands, marches through the streets.
But the last day sees the city go into mourning for the king of carnival, whose passing marks the end of the festivities for another year. A mirror image of the first parade finds a funeral procession moving slowly through the city.
However, the excitement doesn't stop for the bars and restaurants, who continue to lay on special promotions for as long as possible, meaning that patrons won't be able to avoid being caught up in the whirlwind of celebration.
