Augsburg
26th June 2008
The city of Augsburg lies in the south-west of Bavaria and is the third-largest city in the region.
Augsburg contains a wealth of historical and architectural treasures including the town hall, built in 1620, the spectacular churches of St Ulrich and St Afra and the childhood home of the world-renowned radical playwright Bertold Brecht, which is located on a canal of the river Lech.
Other notable attractions include the Diözesanmuseum (diocesan museum) which exhibits a large number of artworks, such as paintings and sculptures from the middle ages.
In the centre of Augsburg are three magnificent fountains erected to commemorate the city's 1,600th anniversary and represent each of the three estates of the free imperial town - the masters (Augustus fountain), the merchants (Mercurious fountain) and the craftsmen (Hercules fountain).
Founded in 15 BC as a Roman military garrison, the city became the capital of the Roman province Raetia and became an imperial free city in 1276.
