The healing powers of Arcachon
19th September 2007
The Bay of Arcachon is one of France's more curious yet most delightful resorts. While the town itself was only officially recognised in the mid-19th century, the bay has nonetheless gained a reputation as a luxurious and relaxing destination.
A visit by Napoleon III shortly after the founding of Arcachon brought greater attention to the bay, but its distinctive style had by this time been established. The Winter Village - a network of residences woven within the forest - had been built by the Pereire brothers, while the healing powers of the peninsula's microclimate had begun to attract intrigued doctors.
The shores of Arcachon take on an almost lagoon-like quality, with salt and fresh waters mingling to create breathtaking colours. By an equally remarkable twist of fortune, visitors are afforded bird's eye views of the bay's entrance, as well as the Landes forest, from the peaks of Europe's highest sand dune -Pilat.
For many, Arcachon is a place to come and recuperate. The bay is home to a thalassotherapy centre, while the mild climate is also said to contribute to good health. Other visitors - particularly the winged variety - land at Arcachon as they stop at Bird Island on their migratory route.
Regardless of the purpose of their stay, visitors can delve into a gastronomic tradition that owes much to the sea. A string of fishing ports, including the larger Port of Arcachon, bring oysters into the bay's restaurants daily. Influences from neighbouring Iberia and wine-loving Bordeaux are also key ingredients.
For a relaxing break by the sea, why not choose Arcachon.
