Diamond Museum in Antwerp

2nd February 2007

Antwerp has long been known as the capital of the diamond world, and the city's Diamond Museum provides a unique insight into years of glittering tradition.

The city is home to four of the 25 diamond exchanges in the world, and around 1,500 diamond companies. Around 70 per cent of all diamonds in the world either come from or pass through Antwerp.

The museum is based on a series of interactive exhibits, ranging from audiovisual presentations of local and international diamond heritage, as well as an examination of the continued popularity of diamonds down the years.

Exhibits such as Feeling with Diamond provide visitors with a chance to handle gems in order to discover the fine craft that lies behind the finished product.

Those wanting to more closely examine the creative process can observe a diamond cutter working in an authentic cutting workshop.

The museum's main attraction is its collection of vintage and modern jewellery, featuring diamonds of all shapes and sizes. Pieces on display range from the sixteenth century to the present day, including a replica of the Crown Jewels featuring the Koh-I-Noor and Cullinan I diamonds – two of the biggest in the world. Visitors to the museum will leave in no doubt over why the world has been fascinated by diamonds for over 2,000 years.
