A break on the lake in Annecy
6th March 2008
For charming villages and expanses of natural beauty, a trip to the alpine region of Annecy has few equals.
The area, sitting to the east of France, has grown around the banks of Lake Annecy to become the capital of three cantons. Found between Geneva and Chambery, the city has had a lively history, being fought over by the French and the House of Savoy as the centuries have passed.
Nowadays, Annecy is a magnet for lovers of outdoor pursuits. Its magnificent lake is perfect for water sports such as canoeing and windsurfing, while the mountainous backdrop attracts paragliding and handgliding enthusiasts.
Dotted around the lake are a number of villages and towns, each offering something that little bit different to the others. Doussard and Bout de Lac provide a more rural setting, while Saint Jorioz boasts delightful tree-lined beaches. Talloires is a diner's heaven and, at the uppermost tip, the city of Annecy itself can be found.
The old city provides some of the region's most beautiful sites, one of which being Palais de l'ile. Jutting out into the river, this triangular curiosity, which began life as a prison in the 12th century, remains one of France's most enduring attractions.
A number of castles can also be visited during a break. Well worth a look is Annecy's castle, standing tall over the lake as if it were one of the alpine peaks. A museum can also be found within.
Discover Annecy with a short break.
