Amalfi and its coastal treasures
16th May 2008
A true Italian gem, Amalfi and its coastline are an Eden for the traveller to whom cost is no barrier.
Located at the southern end of the Bay of Naples, the Amalfi Coast has long held an allure for society's elite, from royalty to artists and stars from the world of show business.
In its early years, Amalfi was synonymous with maritime activity. While the merchants' ships may no longer be in abundance, visitors are, each heading to this awe-inspiring part of Campania to take in the bustling piazzas and mountainous countryside.
Boasting a wealth of medieval architecture, as well as later buildings built on to the steep cliff faces, Amalfi has been granted the status of a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
While the central spots can become busy in summer, the relaxing solitude offered by the rugged environment can easily be found not far away. A trip to the neighbouring islands by boat, or the nearby towns via the serpentine coastal road, reveals much of the region's natural beauty.
During your stay, it would be an opportunity missed if you were not to raise a toast to your hosts with a glass of Limoncello. Some of the finest varieties of the Italian after-dinner drink are produced in Amalfi.
Enjoy a break on the Amalfi Coast.
