Watery wonders in Aix les Bains

9th January 2007

Found in the Savoie region of France, Aix les Bains has long been known for its aquatic connections.

The town is situated by the edge of the largest natural body of water in France, Le Bourget Lake, and is overlooked by Mont Revard, a 1,550 metre tall mountain.

The name 'Aix' is derived from the Latin word for water, and it is the town's hot sulphur springs that still attract attention. The Chevalley Thermal Baths use these springs to provide thermal therapy and hydrotherapy treatments to visitors.

Aix les Bains' scenic surroundings have attracted many famous faces, notably Queen Victoria, who unsuccessfully tried to purchase a second home in the area in 1888.

The Maison du Lac aquarium provides an insight into the local ecology. The largest freshwater aquarium in France, it holds 42 species of fish including rare species of salmon. Other local activities include sailing, windsurfing and water skiing on Le Bourget Lake.

Operas and theatrical performances are regularly held at the town's Casino Grand Cercle, with shows ranging from Cyrano de Bergerac to Faust.

The city's long history as a spa town is also in evidence through the variety of Roman remains that still exist in and around the centre. The town's bathing facilities have been enjoyed by cultures old and new, making Aix les Bains the ideal location for visitors looking to enjoy a relaxing break.
