Aix-en-Provence - town of art and water

Aix-en-Provence is a French town steeped in history, with roots of its name and its identity in water and art. Home - and inspiration - to the likes of Cezanne, a visit to the capital city of Provence by lovers of art will prove time well spent.
The Cezanne Studio allows the exploration of articles familiar to the famous painter, while the Vendome Pavilion has various exhibitions of modern art with a backdrop of 18th century interior design in the building set on acres of parkland.
With its aquatic associations, Aix-en-Provence is the perfect location for enjoying a relaxing spa experience. Sextius thermal baths are situated in the centre of the old town on the site of ancient Roman thermal baths. It uses spring water heated to 34 degrees centigrade to relax and rejuvenate the senses.
Aix-en-Provence benefits from a mild climate and high levels of sunshine. According to tourist officials, the sunshines around 300 days a year, with winter sun "almost permanent". They add that dry summers, with typical July temperatures in the low 20s, are pleasant as a result of a "light perpetual breeze".
The town is an excellent destination for people who love the outdoors. There are six horse riding centres, as well as golf, bowling and tennis facilities, among others. Renting a bike to explore the surrounding Provencal countryside is an ideal family outing.
A visit to this region of France calls for indulgence of gastronomic senses. Cours Mirabeau offers a range of options in its many cafes dotted along the tree-lined boulevard, while local produce such as goat's cheese and vegetables are fragranced with all manner of herbs.
Nearby towns include Marseille (around 15 minutes' drive away) and Avignon, which is under an hour away by car.
