Charlemagne's legacy lives on in Aachen

The city of Aachen is full of historical treats for visitors to discover. It became an important region in the 8th and 9th centuries under the reign of Charlemagne.
Aachen’s main attraction is its Cathedral which dominates the skyline of the city. Charlemagne was buried here in 824. Visitors planning a short break to Aachen in 2007 are in for a particular treat, as the relics of his tomb will be displayed for all to see (relics are only displayed once every seven years). There is also the treasury of the cathedral, which is claimed to be one of the most important ecclesiastical treasuries north of the Alps.
Near the cathedral, in the oldest quarter of Aachen, lies the town hall. It is said that the oldest parts of this ancient building date from the time of Charlemagne himself and the castle-like structure certainly fits the architectural style of that period. Between the cathedral and town hall is the spacious Katschhof, a tree-lined square which adds more character to this picturesque setting. During the summer months, open-air concerts often take place in this square.
The city is also famed for its hot sulphur springs, which were used to great effect by the Romans, who built Baths around the springs which still stands to this day.
There are many different sights for visitors to enjoy while on a short break to Aachen.
