The Train in Spain is Better Than the Plane

Two weeks of travelling by train in southern Spain and Portugal has rekindled my love of train travel. It’s a good few years since I travelled by train in Europe – in recent years, I’ve done it by plane, car, bus and cruise ship. For travelling between big cities, however, I don’t think you can beat trains for comfort and convenience.

Swapping Oxford Street for Las Ramblas

As happens sometimes in life, an opportunity presents itself that is just too good to pass up, even if it does mean other priorities may need to take a back seat. It’s true it was the last weekend before Christmas, it’s true I hadn’t started my Christmas shopping and it’s true that if I failed to deliver the gifts I’d promised, every relationship I had, family or friend, would be hanging by a very loose thread. But what the hell, when you are provided with the chance of a trip to Barcelona and Madrid, luxury hotels and first class travel, all expenses paid and the odd gourmet meal thrown in for good measure, Oxford Street can wait.

Marrakesh Express – London to Marrakech by Train – Part 2

MarrakeshThe next morning, I took the train from Cordoba down to Algeciras, the port for entry into Morocco. The line cuts spectacularly through the Andalucian mountains and the unmistakeable shape of the Rock of Gibraltar looms on the landscape, before you arrive into Algeciras station.

Marrakech Express – London to Marrakech by Train – Part 1

MarrakeshUpon leaving the grandeur of London St Pancras one busy Friday afternoon, the epic nature of my adventure began to dawn on me. As usual, Eurostar whisked me away through the Kent countryside and into Paris, then I made the easy metro transfer on line 5 to Gare d’Austerlitz. This all seemed fairly straightforward, but was simply the hors d’oeuvres for what was to come.
