Eurostar

Paris and its Arrondissements

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

Each time I go to Paris I become more intrigued by and in awe of this wonderful and eclectic city. This trip started with a comfortable and speedy journey on the Eurostar. The time quickly slipped away with the landscapes of England and France passing by my window. Being sat in Standard Premier class meant that there was a large selection of magazines and a satisfying breakfast was served which consisted of orange juice, tea and yummy fresh pastries.

Amsterdam by train from London

Monday, June 11th, 2012

Amsterdam is a city built around its people, in fact the tourist board slogan is I AMsterdam. It doesn’t have an Eiffel Tower, an Empire State Building or a Shard to capture people’s attention (it may be thankful of the latter). What it does have is a free spirit, an undying pride in its civil liberties; a great heritage and community, all of which combine to provide an atmosphere that make it one of the most unique cities of the world. When you throw in the gloriously woven canals that surround the city centre, the unashamed yet surprisingly tasteful red light district and almost endless list of bars, restaurants and cafés that line the streets it makes it a great city to visit also.

London to Lahti (and Stockholm, Copenhagen and Hamburg)

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

I flew to Helsinki-Vantaa on a British Airways flight from London Heathrow. It took me 3 hours to get from rainy London to cold and snowy Finland. I had a lovely and traditional Finnish Christmas in Lahti with my family and friends. Lahti is my hometown as well as the home of Finland’s greatest footballer of all time, Jari Litmanen.

The Romance of Paris

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

The sun was shining as I stepped off the Eurostar train at Paris Gare du Nord station at 12.47pm. The Standard Premier carriage I had been relaxing in during the journey across the English Channel was extremely comfortable with a light continental breakfast and a large array of magazines to glance over. The ease of the train journey from London St Pancras to Paris, along with the short 30 minute check in requirement confirmed to me that reaching the romantic French capital by train definitely beats flying.

A step back in time in Bruges

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

It all started when I boarded a Eurostar service at St Pancras station with my colleague Katerina last Thursday. We were travelling from London to Bruges and were excited by the prospect of exploring a medieval city steeped in history and drenched in old-world charm. The Eurostar reached Brussels Midi station on time, which allowed us plenty of time to transfer onto the SNCB train heading for the Belgian city of Bruges. Our first class carriage was very quiet with only the ticket inspector briefly interrupting our peace.

Avignon and the Hotel De L’Horloge

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Our trip to the walled medieval city of Avignon and the French Riviera started early, with an (on time) 08:02 departure from St Pancras. My travelling companion Sam and I were through security in a fraction of the time you would expect at any one of London’s heaving airports!

For nearly a year I have been selling the virtues of the German railway system based on my colleagues first hand experience, but finally it was my chance to try it out.

The Rhine Valley

Travelling by train in Germany is an absolute pleasure. So I decided to go on a whistle stop tour of the Rhine area via the excellent train network, stopping off in some charming towns and seeing some superb scenery enroute from the comfort of my train seat.

The 8.02 to Paris

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

I began my trip to Paris with a pleasant journey on the Eurostar train. At 08.02 am, this service is characterised by a lot of business travellers, and the plethora of suits surrounding you in the carriage gives an air of importance and purpose! It’s a good idea to get a coffee and pastry in the stylish restaurant car, have these at the bar, and watch the scenery fly past.

Taking the train to Amsterdam

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

I can’t think of a better place to start any trip than London St Pancras. Since its redevelopment in 2007 It has not only become one of the most iconic railways stations around the world but is also one of the most impressive buildings in London and well worth a visit even if you weren’t catching a train like I was.
