For nearly a year I have been selling the virtues of the German railway system based on my colleagues first hand experience, but finally it was my chance to try it out.

Travelling by train in Germany is an absolute pleasure. So I decided to go on a whistle stop tour of the Rhine area via the excellent train network, stopping off in some charming towns and seeing some superb scenery enroute from the comfort of my train seat.

A Journey to Cologne

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Leaving London on a Sunday to head to Cologne I really should have headed Railbookers advice and checked the Transport for London website to see if the tubes were running OK, I didn’t and they weren’t! All was not lost as I was just doing the short hop from the city to St Pancras so jumped in a cab but if I was travelling from further afield perhaps I would have been more anxious!

Amsterdam, Cologne and Luxembourg via the Mosel Valley

Monday, August 15th, 2011

I had a hectic schedule for this trip, beginning with a 7:30 Eurostar from London and a follow on Thalys at 11:50 to Amsterdam. The Thalys train shortens the journey to Amsterdam by an hour and in my experience it is certainly worth the additional cost. Hotel of the Week – Pullman Cologne

Monday, September 7th, 2009

pullman_smallThis week I’ve chosen the very modern and very trendy Pullman Cologne Hotel. I love the top floor bar, where you can have the tipple of your choice and watch the sun set over the city. Rooms are stylish and very light, having big windows to suck in the city views.

Ypres, Aachen and Cologne

Monday, July 27th, 2009

ypres_smallOur trip to Ypres began with the short journey to Brussels from London St Pancras. The high speed Eurostar shot through the Kentish countryside towards the tunnel, and into Brussels in just 1 hour 51 minutes. On arrival in Brussels we took advantage of the free connection to any Belgian station as we settled back in our seats for the journey through to Ypres.
