Bucharest to Istanbul by Train

A very sunny Bucharest in mid-March with temperatures in the lows 20s was a perfect place to be starting a journey from. Bucharest’s North Station was a bustling place with coffee shops, the ubiquitous McDonalds and KFC, a handy supermarket and numerous other stalls selling food and drinks which are all very useful as you need to stock up with provisions for the journey through to Istanbul as the train does not offer any dining or refreshment facilities.

A Passage to Transylvania

I am quite certain that in some of my readers’ minds Transylvania exists somewhere in the mythological space rather than on the surface of the Earth. Yet for others, once they realise Transylvania actually exists, it turns into a place in which to trace the very material inspiration for legends such as Dracula and Countess Bathory.

Taking the night train from Budapest to Bucharest

The Railbooker recently sampled the night train EN473 with the name ISTER (the Latin name for the River Danube) between Budapest and Bucharest. This daily service leaves Budapest Keleti Station at 19.10 and arrives into Bucharest Gari du Nord at 11.38 the following morning.

Exploring Eastern Europe by Train

There is very peculiar thing about Eastern Europe, as far as tourism goes: it ends at Budapest or Krakow. Only a handful of travellers would ever adventure into the ‘unknown’ that lies between Poland and Hungary and mighty Russia. It is precisely this area that I plan to cover on an epic journey crossing 5 countries and hopping on even more trains.
