Stunning Switzerland

Friday, January 25th, 2013

When I found out I was going to be travelling through Switzerland, I really wasn’t sure what to expect. All I knew about it was that the Swiss loved fondue and clocks. I was quite astounded at the sights I saw and it is a journey that I would thoroughly recommend.

Zurich, Venice, Florence and Rome

Wednesday, August 29th, 2012

My trip to Italy by rail began with a flight. This was not just any flight however, as I was departing from London City Airport, a joyful experience and a far cry from the lost bags and extended queues associated with other airports. City airport is a short hop away from central London on the DLR, whilst getting through security to your departure date is not likely to take longer than half an hour. As I was travelling with British Airways, I even had the luxury of checking in my bag free of charge!

A whirlwind trip round scenic Switzerland

Monday, August 13th, 2012

I had been to Switzerland before but only managed to see the Alps from a distance. It was time for a more up-close approach. I undertook a whirlwind trip of scenic Switzerland, taking in four of the major journeys in Switzerland in 5 days.

Bern and Zurich

Bern
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is often overlooked by travellers passing through Switzerland, but this is a mistake. Bern is not just a boring political capital; it is a quirky little city that offers a perfect stopover, short stay, or a good base to explore Switzerland.

The Golden Pass & Hotel Kipling Geneva

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

We took a Golden Pass Panoramic train between Montreux and Zweisimmen, which is perhaps the most scenic leg of this journey, and we were blessed with a terrific blue sky day. The journey began by winding up above Lake Geneva offering spectacular views of the lake and surrounding area.

Zurich to Verona via the Arlberg and Brenner Passes

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

VeronaThere is something about scenic rail travel that has always appealed to me. Twisting and turning through mountains and around lakes is where taking to the rails has one up on rival methods of transport. I decided that it was time to take in two of the most spectacular routes in Europe, leaving Switzerland in the morning and arriving in the charming city of Verona in time for dinner.

Eiffel Tower Paris

London to Paris

Travelling on the Eurostar for me seemed like a normal thing to do. With business in Brussels, I had long become accustomed to the ease of avoiding air or ferry travel to the Continent. When boarding the Eurostar almost a fortnight ago, I therefore did not expect anything different. How wrong I was. Arriving early on a Saturday morning for our train to Paris, everything seemed to be slightly different than the normal rush to which I am accustomed. Perhaps it was the lack of business travellers, the ability to peruse through magazines and newspapers I would never normally read, the happiness of not wearing a suit or the time I was able to set aside to grab a bite to eat. All I knew was that we were going on holiday and the magic of travelling by train had returned.

Italy via the Alps – Matt’s Trip to Verona

Monday, April 5th, 2010

“Italy via the Alps” has become perhaps the signature Railbookers holiday in recent times, and it was one I had long been keen to try out for myself. I had had the idea of exploring Tuscany for a while, but had decided to take in Verona for a couple of nights first. I had visited the city briefly a few years previously and been very impressed, and had decided that I needed to return to do it more justice, and this seemed the perfect opportunity.
