Zurich, Venice, Florence and Rome

My trip to Italy by rail began with a flight. This was not just any flight however, as I was departing from London City Airport, a joyful experience and a far cry from the lost bags and extended queues associated with other airports. City airport is a short hop away from central London on the DLR, whilst getting through security to your departure date is not likely to take longer than half an hour. As I was travelling with British Airways, I even had the luxury of checking in my bag free of charge!

Avignon and the Hotel De L’Horloge

Our trip to the walled medieval city of Avignon and the French Riviera started early, with an (on time) 08:02 departure from St Pancras. My travelling companion Sam and I were through security in a fraction of the time you would expect at any one of London’s heaving airports!

The 8.02 to Paris

I began my trip to Paris with a pleasant journey on the Eurostar train. At 08.02 am, this service is characterised by a lot of business travellers, and the plethora of suits surrounding you in the carriage gives an air of importance and purpose! It’s a good idea to get a coffee and pastry in the stylish restaurant car, have these at the bar, and watch the scenery fly past.

Brussels and Bruges

I began my trip to Brussels with an early journey on the Eurostar train. Your first introduction to Belgium is the trilingual service announcements, in English, French and Flemish. We made on brief stopover in Lille, and before I knew it I was gazing out at low-lying Belgium, and the handsome town-houses on the outskirts of Brussels.
