Lvov, Kiev and Chernobyl

If, like me, you enjoy exploring countries which are slightly off the beaten track and where counting the amount of other tourists you spot can be an entertaining game (!) then I would thoroughly recommend a trip to the Ukraine. The country has a reputation for a being bit of stern place but on a recent trip there I found that this huge country with great contrasts an enjoyable place for a break. The two cities I visited could not have been more different.

Christchurch – One Year On

On February 22nd 2011 Christchurch was hit by an earthquake which brought global attention to the largest city on New Zealand’s South Island and put it on the front page of every newspaper worldwide. A little over two weeks later Japan was hit by a Tsunami and Christchurch was quickly forgotten about as the world’s press switched attentions to East Asia.

Sampling Sardinian Cuisine

Sardinia is an island of great differences and is geographically as close to Africa as it is to mainland Italy. Alghero in the north-west was once a Spanish citadel and the regional dialect there is in fact Catalan.

The Rhine Valley

Travelling by train in Germany is an absolute pleasure. So I decided to go on a whistle stop tour of the Rhine area via the excellent train network, stopping off in some charming towns and seeing some superb scenery enroute from the comfort of my train seat.

Taking the train to Amsterdam

I can’t think of a better place to start any trip than London St Pancras. Since its redevelopment in 2007 It has not only become one of the most iconic railways stations around the world but is also one of the most impressive buildings in London and well worth a visit even if you weren’t catching a train like I was.

Around the World in 80 days – London to Istanbul
October 16th, 2009You may have seen the programme “Around the World in 80 days” for BBC Children in Need. It featured comedians Frank Skinner and Lee Mack travelling across Europe to Istanbul. The journey started from Paris to Vienna on an overnight train.
