Don’t bother with Bruges, get to Ghent…Not only one of my favourite cities but also a firm top five in my hotel list – great location on the banks of the Lei (a river not a canal if you don’t want to upset the locals), right in the heart of Ghent.

The building (like the city) is a medieval masterpiece with a nod to modernity. The Marriott looks like any other spectacularly preserved 15th century town house on the outside but on the inside a roof to floor glass wall gives the lounge/bar a real hint of spaceship! The rooms overlooking the river really are some of my favourite anywhere – dripping character just like the chocolate in my favourite shop just over the river. Sure you pay a bit more but how often do you look out over a Flemish landscape, whilst staying in a top notch hotel?

The restaurant on the ground floor is real corker – some of the best food in the city at good prices. If it’s full of locals it must be good is always a good motto to follow!
