Press Release: Tunnel Vision

Thursday 16th August 2007

On December 9th 2007 the world’s longest rail tunnel on land will become operational. Switzerland opened the Loetschberg Base Tunnel in a grand ceremony in June this year, but it is not until December that the tunnel will be used by passenger and freight trains.

For those who prefer a shorter journey and more time spent at their final destination the 21 mile Loetschberg Base Tunnel under the Alps will significantly reduce journey times in Switzerland, from Switzerland to Italy and from Northern Europe via Switzerland to Italy. Winter sports enthusiasts will be hitting the slopes faster in popular skiing destinations such as Zermatt and for those who prefer firmer ground, Milan’s designer boutiques and the sparkling surroundings of the Lake Maggiore area will feel that much closer.

Holiday makers who consider the journey as an important part of their trip may prefer to eschew speed in favour of the stunning alpine scenery of the original train route across the Alps. However if you prefer life at a faster pace this is your chance to be one of the first people through the world’s longest rail tunnel on land.

Railbookers can tailor make your trip to Milan from £309 for 2 nights accommodation including breakfast and return train travel.
