Press Release: Top Ten Favourite Stations
Wednesday 1st August 2007
Railbookers recently asked its customers "Which is your favourite European train station, and why?"
We had over 1000 entries, 15% of those who responded chose Paris Gare du Nord as their top European station, followed by London Waterloo in 2nd place and London Kings Cross / St Pancras in 3rd.
Other stations that made the top ten were Lille, Brussels, Bruges, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Venice and Madrid Atocha. Judging from the responses we have had, train stations are a very evocative subject; from memories of travels past to anticipations of future adventures, the train station is an important part of your trip. Stories recounted ran from the sublime:
“St Pancras built originally in 1877 and gradually hidden beneath a layer of grime, is now like a phoenix visible again. The station full of the memory of steam, but now promising so much with Eurostar taking possession. Intimate, vast, Victorian, modern, a station of the past and future.”*
To the ridiculous:
“I once arrived at the station [Lille] after a long tiring journey from Manchester. As I was waiting to board a TGV I saw through the glass walls a man in his pants washing his clothes in a fountain. Priceless.”*
Now that Eurostar services are moving to St Pancras and Europe will be even closer from 14 November 2007, why not book a short break to Europe with Railbookers and choose your own favourite station?
