Press Release: Hidden Paris

Thursday 11th October 2007

Underneath the boulevards, boutiques and galleries of present day Paris lies the Paris of the past, an underground world, better suited to the pages of Gaston Leroux’s “The Phantom of the Opera” or Victor Hugo’s “Les Misérables” than the frivolities of the 21st century.

If you want to visit the past inhabitants of this extraordinary city you can take a tour of the Catacombs, a maze of subterranean galleries used to relieve Paris’ poorly maintained cemeteries in the late 1700s, and home to such famous names as Danton, Rabelais and Marat. In total the Catacombs contain the remains of more than 6 million bodies; this fascinating tour is not for the faint hearted.

Hold your nose and venture down into the sewers of Paris, a much more enlightening experience than you would think. Les Musée des Egouts de Paris traces the history of the Parisian sewers giving visitors the chance to explore the underground streets of Paris as well as looking at the water cycle and its history in Paris.

There is a lot more to the Louvre than meets the eye! Before it became a famous museum in 1973, housing such works as the Mona Lisa, this stunning building was a royal fortress. Built in the late 12th century, you can see the fortress foundations underneath the Louvre as part of your Louvre ticket price.
