Press Release: Dare to bare
Friday 24th August 2007
We have all experienced those awkward ‘not sure where to look’ moments whilst sunbathing on the beach when you realise that, despite your own fondness for preserving your modesty in public, others prefer a more even suntan.
Following the recent law preventing male tourists from walking around without their shirts in St Mark’s Square in Venice it would seem that the Italian authorities are equally concerned about the amount of flesh on show and will be deploying stewards to enforce the ban.
The Parisians also like to leave a little more to the imagination. Despite the hedonism of having an artificial beach lining the Seine each summer, those who attempt to wear g-strings, go bare chested or wear nothing at all risk a fine issued by City Hall. Ooh la la!
However you may get more than you bargained for if you choose to spend time in Amsterdam. Those taking a morning stroll on June 3 2007 were greeted with the sight of dozens of naked woman posing astride their bicycles on a bridge. This time however it was all in the name of art, and was in fact a project by American photographer Spencer Tunick.
And it will come as no surprise to anyone that the good people of Berlin are not adverse to dressing only in their birthday suits in the public parks on a hot summers day. So next time you visit the German capital be prepared to shield your eyes, feign extreme interest in a book or better still invest in some dark, dark glasses. Alternatively you could just grin and bare it…
