The flexibility of rail travel

7th December 2007

The growth of high-speed rail networks as a means for travelling in Europe has afforded passengers much more freedom in planning their breaks.

As journey times come down, so is the popularity rising, with the Association of British Travel Agents recently noting that rail travel is becoming an "increasingly attractive" option for those heading to the continent.

Despite the recent boom in short-haul flying, many are now waking up to the advantages of traveling by train. Lengthy delays, lost luggage, baggage charges and airport transfers are all impacting upon the reputation of air travel.

"With rail travel you have shorter check-in times, your luggage travels with you and the view outside your window is an important part of your holiday," a spokesperson for Railbookers said.

"Another advantage is that you can travel from city centre to city centre - cutting out travelling to airports and transfer costs."

Recently a European airline was ordered by regulators to withdraw an advertising campaign that claimed passengers could fly to Paris from London faster than travelling by rail. In fact, when transfers and airport waiting times were taken into account, travelling by Eurostar from London to Paris was found to be the fastest route.
