Lotschberg Base Tunnel opens

4th September 2007

Travel between the Valais region of Switzerland and the rest of the country is set to become far quicker with the opening of the Lötschberg Base Tunnel on December 9th.

Now, visitors looking to travel from destinations such as Basel, Bern and Zürich to other Swiss cities will be able to do so at a fraction of the time. For example, passengers will be able to reach Zermatt from Basel in three hours and 12 minutes - 72 minutes faster than the current connection.

Not only will this afford rail travellers more flexibility when visiting Switzerland, but it will also allow for faster travel around the continent. The arrival of a high-speed network beneath the Alps will make it easier to combine trips to Northern Europe and Italy. Railbookers can tailor make your trip to Milan from £309 for two nights' accommodation including breakfast and return train travel.

Rail enthusiasts are also sure to be enticed by the opening of the Lötschberg Base Tunnel, which has been in planning since the early 1980s. The 21-mile line is the world's largest on-land rail tunnel and runs beneath the previous Lötschberg Tunnel, which operated as a motorail service.

Of course, the subterranean service does not allow the same breathtaking views from the cabin that some of the older, overland alpine routes may do. But with rail speeds of up to 250 kilometres per hour possible on tilting trains, travellers are likely to have much more time to enjoy the destinations when they arrive.

Why not let Railbookers take care of your transalpine trip.
