Ebbsfleet Landmark designs unveiled
8th May 2008
Rail travellers embarking on a journey to Europe from Ebbsfleet International will soon be greeted by one of five potential landmarks that were unveiled today.
A number of artists were invited to propose designs for an Ebbsfleet landmark, including Turner prize-winning Mark Wallinger and Christopher Le Brun.
Today, all of the artists' designs were revealed. Wallinger's proposal consists of a huge white horse standing in the Ebbsfleet fields. Le Brun, on the other hand, envisages a vast white disc and a wing emerging from the ground.
While each of the plans is markedly different, they all must confirm to certain specifications - for example, they must all be 50 metres in stature.
The £2 million commission will be located on the A2 in north Kent, making for a striking first impression for visitors from the UK and abroad arriving in Ebbsfleet. The completion date for the chosen project has been set as 2010.
Other artists who have submitted designs are Daniel Buren, Richard Deacon and Rachel Whiteread.
The addition of the 'Angel of the South' will continue the regeneration of Ebbsfleet, which was a busy port in the 19th century. And with Ebbsfleet International now taking passengers to Brussels, Lille and Paris, the region is very much back on the map.
