Dame Kelly Holmes opens Ebbsfleet
4th February 2008
A very special guest was on hand to open the new station at Ebbsfleet International last week.
Dame Kelly Holmes is one of the fastest women in the world, and so it was perhaps fitting that she should be invited to open the latest station for Eurostar, the high-speed rail operator.
Representatives from business and environmental groups attended the official opening to learn about the benefits the network can bring.
Speaking on the new service, Dame Kelly said: "If you want to be world-class in sport or in business you have to seek out and seize opportunities to get ahead.
"Ebbsfleet International is now the fastest and greenest way to reach the opportunities of Europe, ahead of the competition."
Passengers traveling from Ebbsfleet are now able to reach destinations such as Paris, Brussels, Lille and the French Alps quicker than ever before. Journey times to the French and Belgian capitals are two hours five minutes and one hour 41 minutes respectively.
The station, which is located close to junction 2 on the M25, offers 2,500 parking places and a ten-minute check-in time.
Ebbsfleet's opening follows the unveiling of Eurostar's first UK hub, St Pancras International in London, in November of last year.
