Abta: Rail travel is increasingly attractive

The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) has described rail travel as "increasingly attractive" to those looking to travel around Europe.
According to Sean Tipton, a spokesman for the association, developments in rail travel - such as the establishment of Railteam, the collaboration between Europe's high-speed networks - are working to make for a quicker and more affordable service.
"Traditionally, there were two things that stopped people going by train; the cost and the journey time," he said. "The cost is getting better and all the high-speed rail networks announced recently that they will be operating much more closely together."
Asked if the train will continue to grow in popularity for continental travellers, Mr Tipton replied: "I think it will, especially with journey times coming down, because in Europe they are investing so much more in their rail networks than we are."
Costs and journey times aside, various other advantages exist in getting around Europe by train rather than other options such as flying. One of the chief benefits would be the convenience of arriving in the centre of your chosen destination, rather than having to take a taxi or link from an airport - not to mention the quicker check-in.
Rail travel is perhaps a more relaxing way to travel too. As well as the freedom of being able to walk around the carriage, passengers are able to enjoy at close hand the beautiful scenery that Europe affords, such as the alpine landscapes through which Switzerland's train lines run.
