Eurostar's new line breaks record on first run
5th September 2007
Railbookers yesterday hailed Eurostar's record-breaking first run on the new line between London and Paris as "fantastic".
The inaugural journey between Paris and St Pancras International gave journalists and VIPs the chance to experience High Speed 1 ahead of its official opening on November 14th.
Leaving Paris' Gare du Nord yesterday at 10:44 local time, the train arrived at Eurostar's new British home St Pancras International at 11:47 BST, setting a record time of two hours and three minutes. Previously, the quickest journey time was two hours and 35 minutes.
During the record-setting trip, Eurostar reached speeds of 195 mph in the UK and 202 mph in France.
"The journey was fantastic," said Christian Sutton, Railbookers' product executive, who was one of the first industry figures to sample the UK's first high-speed line.
"The fact that you can go from Paris to the magnificent new St Pancras International in so short a time will bring Europe even closer by rail."
When Eurostar moves from London Waterloo to its new base in November, it will not only bring London and Paris into the 'two-hour club' but will also give British passengers the ability to enjoy a seamless, quicker connection to Europe's expanding high-speed rail network.
There will also be another Eurostar station opening at Ebbsfleet International in Kent on November 19th.
Railbookers tailor-makes short breaks and holidays to Europe by Eurostar and rail, including handpicked quality hotels.
